Land crew matters

Shore support

The driver and shore team are not an afterthought. If the boat is the show, shore support is the part that keeps the show from becoming performance art.

Driver basics

Truck rules worth repeating

  • Never let the diesel truck go below 1/4 tank.
  • Clearance is 11 ft. If it looks close, it is close.
  • Wait for the glow plug and let the engine warm up.
  • Keep key gear grouped for fast dock handoff.
Chicago move

Chicago to St. Ignace

  • Start from 215 South Wabash after Chicago support wraps.
  • Head for St. Ignace Marina, 13 S State St.
  • Check in with Tim before unloading or leaving the vehicle.
  • Get the temporary parking pass first. Future-you will be grateful.
Port Huron move

Mackinac to Port Huron

  • Meet boat and gear at Mackinaw City Municipal Marina.
  • Unload incoming gear first, then reload outgoing gear.
  • Refuel truck and boat support at St. Ignace.
  • Stage for Port Huron and confirm the next-day plan with the team lead.

Crew updates

Keep current

A simple place for crew-facing reminders. The deeper working notes and next-year planning live in Captains View.

Before travel

Check before you leave

  • Open the latest one-sheet for your event.
  • Confirm hotel, room, arrival, and departure details.
  • Make sure gear and credentials are where they need to be.
At the dock

Dockside sanity check

  • Keep unload/load gear grouped and easy to hand off.
  • Give shore support room to do shore support things.
  • If a plan changes, tell the person who actually needs to know.
After racing

Capture what changed

  • Send updates, photos, or corrected details to the person maintaining the page.
  • Save lessons while they are fresh, before they become dock folklore.
  • Put captain-only planning notes in Captains View.
Update rhythm

Page maintenance

  • Before each event: update room assignments, contact numbers, and departure times.
  • During the event: keep notes short and useful.
  • After the event: move the private learning into Captains View.
Owner / crew clarity

What belongs here

  • Who needs to be where, when, and with what gear.
  • Hotel, marina, parking, restaurant, and truck handoff details.
  • Anything that prevents six texts, three guesses, and one confident wrong turn. Jon has enough to navigate.
